What Leads to a Price Change for Petrol and Diesel in Pakistan?
International Oil Prices
Pakistan produces some crude oil domestically, but local production is not sufficient to meet national demand. As a result, the country relies heavily on imported crude oil and refined petroleum products, making international prices and exchange rates major factors in determining local fuel prices.
Exchange Rate
This purchase is dependent on global crude oil prices, which are paid by the country in dollars. As the dollar fluctuates against the rupee, the price of crude oil also fluctuates. The exchange rate is one of the most common reasons behind the fuel price.
Freight and Distribution Charges
Apart from the dollar conversion and import prices, Pakistan also pays shipping on the crude oil, which lands in Karachi and is then further transported inside the country to refineries. This incurs shipping charges both globally and internally. This is added to the overall cost of petrol and diesel.
After the petroleum prices are refined, they are transported to petrol pumps and storage facilities, which incur further shipping costs.
Dealer Margins
The petroleum dealers further have their own margin as well on every liter of fuel sold, which makes them money. All of these factors combine together and contribute towards the final price of petrol, diesel and other products.
Petroleum Levy and Taxes
Apart from this, the Government of Pakistan has also imposed a Petroleum Levy, which is technically not a tax, but it is an added fee over the price of petroleum products that consumers must pay. The Petroleum Levy allows the government to collect revenue for itself through a non-tax method.
Apart from this, further taxes like sales tax, Climate Support Levy, and Customs Duty are also included in the price and are fluctuating continuously, leading to a petroleum price increase or decrease.
