Mitsubishi Motors has Officially Revealed the Fifth-Generation Pajero

The new Pajero sticks to its Diesel roots with a brand-new look, modern tech, and a bolder design.

Tokyo, Japan: Mitsubishi Motors has officially revealed the all-new, fifth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero, bringing back the iconic nameplate after its discontinuation in 2021. The seven-seater flagship returns in the form of a bold 4×4 built to go anywhere, twenty years after the previous-generation model and five years after its discontinuation. The new Pajero was revealed officially in Japan under the ‘Grand Charisma’ design theme and will be available on sale from late 2026.

The new Pajero will be built in Thailand and showcases a brand-new direction for the vehicle. Mitsubishi is looking to re-establish the badge at the very top of its range, and for that, it has designed it with a muscular look that not only looks modern but actually brings with it an upmarket interior and hardcore mechanical components. The name Pajero has always been associated with off-road extremes, with its first generation winning the toughest Dakar Rally back in 1985.

Engine and Powertrain:

The new fifth-generation Pajero comes with a new-generation ‘4N16’ 2.4-litre turbo-diesel which delivers 150 kW hp along with 480 Nm of torque. It comes fitted with a variable-geometry turbocharger, water-cooled intercooler, and dual-loop EGR. This is the same engine as its Triton pickup truck, but it has been tuned to deliver a small bit of additional torque. There are no petrol, or subsequently hybrid, options on the table as Mitsubishi is strictly marketing it with diesel and as a proper, rugged 4×4.

This is delivered to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic and uses Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4×4 system. The vehicle sits on a custom ladder frame with a rear diff lock, low-range gearing and a 3.5 tonne towing capacity. Other features include AdBlue and an auto stop-start system, and it meets Euro 6d emissions standards. The Super Select II 4×4 System offers 2H, 4H, 4HLc, and 4LLc modes with Super-All Wheel Control and Active Yaw Control across seven driving modes: Eco, Normal, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock. A low-range transfer case is also part of the package.

To tackle tougher terrain more easily, the new Pajero features a 230mm ground clearance, a 30.4-degree approach angle, a 22.6-degree breakover angle, and a 25.8-degree departure angle. These are serious figures for an off-road stock vehicle. To make driving easier, you will find a 3D Multi Around Monitor that utilizes four different cameras to display a 3D model of the car, refreshing at around 30 FPS to tell you what is happening around the vehicle in real-time. It also offers a front under-floor view that effectively makes the bonnet disappear, showing rocks and other obstacles ahead on the path. This view comes automatically when 4HLc or 4LLc modes are activated but can be manually turned on as well.

Visual Design:

Visually, the new Mitsubishi Pajero looks beautiful. At the front, you get a squared-off, upright silhouette that is an obvious nod to the older generations of Pajero. The designers describe the front as inspired by a kendo mask, which is worn by a Japanese fencer with bamboo swords. This is framed by advanced animated LED lighting, a sculpted ‘Dakar’ bonnet, big wheel arches on the sides, and a blacked-out A-pillar with a solid C-pillar at the back. It will offer two grille treatments at the front, and sadly no spare tire hanging off in the back. Mitsubishi went and tucked it under the rear of the body for a cleaner look.

Its dimensions are 4920 mm from the front to the back, 1925 mm wide, and 1910 mm high, with a 2870 mm wheelbase.

Inside, it is clear that Mitsubishi did not hold back when it came to quality. It features extensive sound absorption and insulation plus acoustic glass for the windscreen and front and rear side windows. The interior has a variety of materials including semi-aniline leather. The flagship models will receive the very best of the tech and the materials.

They will feature twin 14.3-inch displays with a ‘live’ background that shifts with the time of day, a retro-looking triple-gauge cluster complete with altimeter and pitch-and-roll dials, three-zone climate control, heated rear seats, a large panoramic sunroof, and a 12-speaker Yamaha Ultimate audio system co-developed with the company. The third row has received a major overhaul with a relocated spare tire and additional space for the passengers.
